ZMF Aegis Official Thread

Got it up and running and I am absolutely loving what I am hearing so far. I got to say, this is the quietest tube amp I have ever heard. There is zero noise whatsoever, and I seriously can't even tell the amp is on, without looking to see if the tubes and meters are lit up. It's a spooky kind of quiet with my VC's, of which usually pick up noise if it's there. The background is pitch black, of which really let's the detail and nuances come through in full effect. Within the first few seconds of listening, you can already tell this is TOTL level sound and has something special. . .

lol… yeah, I often have to take a double take just to check the amp is on before pressing play on Roon 😂 Enjoy!

While the amp changes with different tubes, it's not like some OTLs I've heard that need crazy tubes. I'd be happy with the JJs if I didnt want to go nuts, JJs actually sound really good and it was a task finding a 6sl7 that matched or provided enough difference for the akternate tube set that will be available.
Any clues as to what the alternative tube set for the ZMF Aegis might be? 😊

Would love to hear more about your process in evaluating and selecting these tube pairings. Thanks!

Well, this just went onto my list of potential tube amps I'm going to buy next year. :)

"Ah, yes, indeed, it's fun time. . ."

I got to hear @L0rdGwyn's personal DIY Aegis at CanJam Dallas back in November of last year and that very unique and highly capable sound has been stuck in the back of my mind ever since. So with that said, I am super pumped and thankful to be able to demo a Commercial version and put it through it's paces in my own home.

I got to say this thing looks even more amazing in real life than it does online. This amplifier is heavy as heck, and my HA300MK2 is very heavy as well, but I think the Aegis just might have it beat.

More to come after I fired it up and spend some quality time listening with it. The tube roller in me already is having thoughts of possible tube combos. . . but I am going to just stick with the stock set for a little while and get a good feel for it first.
Jealous!!!!!

Day two, and I am still in awe of this amplifier! The grip, detail, and staging are all top notch. The air and refinement in the treble is breathtaking, and female vocals sound especially magical. Dare I say it, but I am not missing my HA300MK2 at all while listening with the Aegis. This is with only the stock New Production tubes in the Aegis, and I can only imagine how insane things will get with some good NOS tubes. :astonished:

Having an amp of this caliber available in commercial form is unbelievable, and with what I am hearing, I imagine this amp is going to sell like crazy.

Oh - this one for sure given the Decware is an OTL and that were also out of stock of it.

The OTL doesn't really drive planars to its ability but it's a magical dynamic driver amp.

The Decware does work as an amazing preamp though.

I finally got my hands on NOS RCA 6550s. Listened to them over the weekend. I know they will get better with some burn it time but man do they already sound good! Great bottom end and good clarity and soundstage. They sound really good with the AC but the real winner for me was with the Caldera.
Listening to Dave Matthews Band early albums, the timbre of each instrument really shone through (never really fully understood timbre until now). I've never heard Dave Matthews Band that good before. Next thing I know its been 4 hours 🫨.

The Aegis + Caldera combo is seriously magic (I have the DIY version). Can't wait for more people to get their hands on one.

Hi, Not sure if this was covered or not, but will this amp be able to power the Tungsten’s and Susvara’s with ample headroom? I know in Goldwerger’s review of the Tungsten’s, the DYI version was a good pairing.

I can confirm is a fantastic pairing with the Tungsten's with ample headroom, not sure about the Susvara as I don't have one. Maybe @goldwerger can chime in!

Thanks @Kdot. I think the Tungsten’s require more juice than the Susvara’s, so the Aegis should be sufficient (?).

Yeah it can run Susvara. @AcousticMatt seems to be using it.

Will do! Have only tried XLR with Susvara so far, and that sounded really nice!

I had a couple of Susvara owners come into the ZMF room in CanJam NYC and got good feedback on the pairing.
